Hey, I curated an art show!

I feel so honored to have been a small part of Rural Routes: Not Your Traditional Landscape at the OAL Gallery with Catherine Bell Smith and Claire Smith. I've never curated a show before, and I totally enjoyed the process: collaboration, conceptualization, and support. It was wonderful! I hope my contribution added to the overall success of the show although, I have to admit, most of my work happened at the beginning.

Lynda Barry is Always There for Me in Periods of Awakening

When I left my home at 19 and moved to San Diego for college, the first book I bought was Lynda Barry's Agony. (I can find no reference to this book online and am beginning to wonder if I invented it.)

This book changed me. It gave a voice to my own story -- not literally, but demonstrated not only is it okay to go to the real, dark, painful places in art, but it's sometimes preferable. It's also okay to laugh at it, and to recognize that sometimes, bad things happen for no reason.

I spent the next 8 years in art school working out my own history in various media. I worked my way through, which is why it took me so long, and at the end of that period, my professors all urged me to go to grad school. But after that much time, I needed a break. I promised myself I would go back eventually.

Between then and now, Lynda Barry has popped up for me in various places. The most memorable was reading Cruddy -- another painful reminder of my own childhood trauma -- and more recently, reading the adventures of Marlys for the first time, finding One Hundred Demons! at the library, and falling in love with Lynda Barry all over again.

When we heard Lynda Barry was going to be speaking in Indianapolis, BF Bob Musgrave, Stacie Sells and I decided we needed a road trip. It was worth the 3 hour drive to watch and hear her speak, sing, dance, tell jokes, and crystalize the idea that an image -- that flash of that thing that stays in your mind's eye and never leaves you -- is powerful, lasting, meaningful, can be life-changing and make life a little bit more worth living.

Meeting her was even better. She was generous, kind, funny, and endearing. You could tell she genuinely enjoyed meeting each person, and found a little bit of herself to share with everyone.

My art is no longer as dark as it used to be -- not even as dark as it was last year. I finally applied to grad school for that MFA. I was rejected.

I was surprised, and kind of devastated. I applied without thought to rejection. I loved the program. It seemed so right for me. I was separated, my children were older and no longer as dependent on me. I was finally ready to go back. And as a semi-professional artist in my own right, it didn't occur to me I would be found... lacking.

It was a lot like unrequited love:

"Don't you see we were meant to be?"

"No. I don't see that."

"Oh." (cry)

So I'll carry on. I won't give up on art. I can't. It's part of who I am. But maybe I'll do more monkeying around.

In the Words of Another

I'm reading One Hundred Demons by Lynda Barry. Last night I went from the chapter "Missing Magic Lanterns," to "Cicadas."

An object... "Each with a magic lantern inside capable of conjuring worlds."

"The cicadas were whirring in the elms as they are whirring now. Their amber husks are everywhere. Brittle ghosts of creatures who call from the tree tops."

I found this cicada shell remarkably complete. I saved it for years. I sealed it for protection. And then, I cocooned it, and housed it, and gave it new wings.

In ancient mythologies, the Cicada represented resurrection, rebirth, immortality, spiritual realization and spiritual ecstasy, and was sacred to Apollo.

Reliquary: Glass

This piece was built around a fragment of sea glass I found on the beach several years ago. I created less of a narrative in my head about it, as it already brought its own story: a shard of something functional was weathered by natural processes. It went into the ocean, was scoured by the water, salt, and sand, and was returned smooth and polished: a gem.

It represents how our life experiences can erode us: We break and crumble to bits, but we can gently tumble and spin, and return even more beautiful as something new.

I set the glass as you would a precious stone, into some knitting, and I began knitting a house for it suggesting a bottle from which it might have originated. No sketch was needed.

Reliquary: Charm

I thought I might blog about some of the pieces in the Reliquary Series, and explain my process a bit.

The first stage of these pieces is the found object, or relic. It might be something I found, was given, or something from my past.

This piece was built around a charm given to me by a friend's daughter. She found it, and it was dirty, and while trying to clean it off, she left it to rust in the kitchen sink. She was disappointed and was going to throw it away, so I asked if I could have it.

This is a girl consumed by thoughts of love and finding a boyfriend. I thought, if this charm carried a magical power, it would have something to do with that -- perhaps a way to tell if your lover were true.

It hung from the chain and swung like a pendulum. I imagined if you suspended the charm over your lover's breast, it would hang still -- without moving, constant -- if your lover's heart were true, but rotate or swing if not.(Remember the pencil test? You hung a pencil over your wrist to see what gender your babies would be. If it twirled, you would have girls. If it swung in a straight line, you would have boys.)

I sketched what I thought would be a workable house for this "relic," thinking of a cloth or fabric the charm might be suspended within, for use, but also veiled and protected:

The end result formed something less cloth-like and more of a bell shape, which is strangely appropriate, and also reminds me a of a lady's old-fashioned, full skirt from another era. In fact, it reminds me of picture of Cinderella's dress from a book I had as a child.

I have some good photos of the work, but David captures them intuitively, in situ, with shadows, in a way that really helps you understand how the lighting plays. Enjoy.

Howsabout a Merry Christmas Gift Bag Tutorial?

A few years ago I started making fabric gift bags. I didn't invent the idea. I stole it from my Grandmother. I hear there are some other Grannies out there doing the same thing. But, let's face it, if you have extra fabric laying around, fabric bags are cheap (or free,) you can reuse them year after year, and you aren't throwing gift wrap into a land fill.

How to make them:

Cut some squares or rectangles of fabric, whatever size you need for your gift:

Right sides facing, sew or serge 3 sides together:

Make gussets on the bottom by opening up the bottom corners, and flattening them into a triangle:

Sew or serge across:

(If you are sewing the gussets, you'll need to trim off the corners with scissors.)

Finish the top edge of the bags, if desired. Place two buttonholes on either side of each side seam (four total,) measuring placement by folding down the top of the bag for desired depth of casing:

Make buttonholes:

(I make crappy buttonholes.)

Sew the casing down:

Turn the bag right side out (and check out those gussets! A nice gusset floats my boat.)

Using a safety pin, feed some pretty cord through the casing -- one length through the two buttonholes on one side, and another length through the two buttonholes on the other side.

Pull them all the way through, leaving about 4-5 inches hanging out of each buttonhole. Secure the ends with a knot.

Pull the cords on either side to gather the top of the bag:

Miriam Climenhaga and I have challenged each other to start writing again. The deadline was this weekend. We used to blog on Xanga, and we blogged and we blogged and we commented and we made friends and we laughed and we cried and we blogged some more. We miss it.

We thought we might want to have a topic, but freaked out about that and ran the other direction. Too much pressure. Too much commitment.

It's Sunday, and I have no more time to procrastinate. So here, Miriam, after a long soak in the tub, is what I have to say.

My approach to creating art can be haphazard. Sometimes a piece begins with an idea -- a thought, a concept. Sometimes it begins with words -- the title. Occasionally, I have only a visual. And rarely, it will present itself whole, and my hands simply channel the form.

I've been working on this piece that started as a visual. This doesn't happen too often for me, and is usually the weakest impetus. But I went with it, because let's face it, what choice do I have?

I worked on it, and it began to manifest. As it unfolded, I didn't like it. I didn't trust it. It seemed wrong. I balked. I didn't understand it. I left it to hang, unfinished, bits and pieces lying around on my studio table. I eyed it suspiciously, and worked on other pieces.

Today I looked again at the work and thought, I'll just go through the motions. I'll do whatever it was I thought I was going to do in the first place -- whether or not I like it, whether or not I trust it will really work.

And once my fingers started working, I saw that it would work. It came together rather well. It pleased me. It was what I envisioned.

Now I have four pieces for my show in January. It's not enough, but it's a good start, and I'm on a roll.

Okay, Miriam. The pressure is on.

This is my piece for Por Vida III. It's the beginning of a new series. This is a photo someone else took of my piece at the show. They did a really good job, considering how difficult it is to photograph my work. I wish you could see all of it, though. I'll photograph it in the light box when I get it back.

I think about death a lot this time of year, in a broader context though -- more like what it means to be human, or even to exist. What is at our core, holds our matter together, and what keeps us shining, and going, during life and sometimes even after? How do our souls become intertwined with others? Why do the strands sometimes break? What keeps some of them connected? Is it desire? Choice? Action? Or something intangible that binds from beneath or behind our existence?

I don't know what I'm talking about.

Here's a song to add to my playlist for my wake. I will die some day, you know. So will you. I hope we stay connected. I may haunt you from the internet. Just keep bloggin' from the other side.

Baby Steps and Little Things

Hello, blogger platform. I've missed your cerulean header and cheerful orange logo. Edit Html? Why, yes! I think I shall!

I don't have a photo for you today because my camera battery is dead, and I've lost the charger. It's here somewhere, in a bag or a box or a cupboard. I'll find it, or get a new one. Don't worry (I say to myself.)

Art: I've missed a couple of important deadlines, but made a couple of important deadlines, and all things considered, I'm okay with it. I have to be. Baby steps.

I forgot to take a pic of the Exquisite Corpse piece and my Por Vida III piece. I really like the new direction, and if I only had a pic, I could show you and get feedback.

It's funny how major life changes shake your foundation. I'm rebuilding: waking up and moving out of survival mode. I've started cooking again. I wouldn't say it's been 100% successful, but I made an apple pie yesterday, and the boys went back for seconds, so it must be palatable. We went apple picking. We decorated for Halloween. All the stuff we usually do in the fall, and we savored it.

It's like the little things are the first to go. Without the little things, life doesn't feel like life.

So here's an old photo, for visual interest:

I'm going to make this today. I have apples from the orchard, and squash given to me by Boyfriend Extraordinaire. I just wish I could remember how I made it the last time. This is why you should not delete old blogs.

I Ran to the Rhythm of My Breath

My iPod is broken. I've been wanting to run, but I always rely on the music to keep me motivated. I make playlists, and arrange the songs in the order I want to pace my run: warm up and psych out with The Black Keys, blow the roof off with The Dodos, chill down with Mexican Institute of Sound.

I needed to run, though, so this morning I tried it without music. It was just me on the trail, cicadas singing, bikers always coming around on my left, and friendly joggers waving and smiling.

I soon began to run a very comfortable, steady pace to the rhythm of my own breath: light, cadenced, balanced, my own.

I'm so used to setting myself to the tempo of something outside me -- whether it's music, or deadlines, or other people. It was odd to let my natural rhythm guide me, but it made me feel calm and strong.

Tuesday I'll be presenting as curator for the amazing Catherine Bell Smith and Claire E. Smith at the Ohio Art League's Member Curated Exhibition meeting. If you are a member, come out to vote and support our local artists!

On Thursday, I'll be presenting on behalf of Mother Artists at Work at the Creative Soapbox at the Columbus Museum of Art. Over 50 groups will be presenting! Wow, Columbus is a Happening!

And the bad news last: Due to another move coming up, I have to postpone my show at Haiku in August. Luckily, I've been rescheduled for early next year. Thank you, powers that be!

Change is Hard

New studio: Check it!

Yeah, it's a few feet from my bed. Yeah, I got rid of a boatload of stuff. No, I don't get much work done these days. But I have amazing kids, an awesome new job, and a dreamy new boyfriend! Sweet!

If you look closely, you can see Mr. Jack Olson's drawing and $30 painting hanging over there by my desk. And Emily of Texas's Cowboy Retablo (in honor of my Grandpa) is hanging on the brick.

And of course there's all kinds of Sharon Dorsey up in there. I mean, I LIVE with her now, for godssakes. I don't even think I have to MENTION her on my blog anymore!

I probably will, though.

So, yeah, on the art front, Sadie Hawkins coming up, and a solo show at Haiku in August. Time to VERK!

It's Personal

Some of you know -- but many of you don't -- Eric and I have decided to call it quits. This began late summer 2009, and led up to a definite decision right before Christmas. It's all amicable, joint custody, etc.

Since then I've been healing, transitioning, and making art. I'm moving into Ma Dorsey's boarding house, the steps of which have already begun. I should be totally moved in by May 1.

The boys are staying in the house with Eric. This way they are not uprooted and, we hope, will make an easier transition for them. I will be there every day after school, plus the weekend juggling, so I will get to see them all the time!

I have a car, insurance, a checking account, and am working on getting a job in addition to continuing to make art. You can still reach me at the same cell phone number.

Am I forgetting anything? Is there anything else you need to know? I will now take questions.

ETA: The love and support of my friends through all this has been INVALUABLE! I love you, friends!

If you are anywhere near Minneapolis, you should get thee down to the Textile Center and check out the Metaphoric Fibers show! It's mind blowing!

There were many amazing works, but that piece in the window? HOLY BUNUEL! I kept thinking Un Chien Andalou! I don't know why my mind put those together, but I think it has to do with une bicyclette à Paris and something about slicing an eyeball open.

(One thing Twitter does offer me is a place to share my random and irrelevant thoughts, as well as play by play updates on what I'm thinking, what I'm cooking, and other fascinating details about myself.) But here is my mandatory, weekly blog, which is supposed to be about art, and is!

Sharon not only has her solo show at Haiku this month, but she's in Columbus Alive today! Modeling a Liberty Handknits scarf! She's famous. But you should get down to Haiku to see her show. And if you want a scarf like Sharon's, I'd be happy to make you one. But if you knit, well here's the pattern and make it your own self!

Speaking of Haiku, I'm having a solo show there in August, 2010! This is great because the more art I make, the more art I have to make. Is that "snowball?" Or is it "trickle-down?" Not sure.

I also got the okay to share about my two-person show with Morris Jackson at Lindsay Gallery in March. The reception is March 12 from 6-9 p.m. Please come! I will cry if you don't.

I have a piece in Metaphoric Fibers: Untamed Knitting and Crochet at the Textile Center in Minneapolis. I'm going to the opening on March 5th, and making a pit stop in Chicago on the way.

Finally, Mother Artists at Work has some stuff going on, so go over there and check that out.

Forever Bag

1920s Vintage Silk Tea Gown

Look at this find I got at the Antique Mall in German Village today:

(I am no super model, but I'm doing the best I can with what I've got.)

It's a vintage 1920's, printed silk tea gown. I've often fantasized about a dress like this, but I never thought I'd find one intact I could afford. I thought I'd have to make one. (And I may, yet.) In the meantime, isn't it beautiful?

It needs a few repairs, but nothing I can't handle. I love the print. What is that? Art Nouveau? Primitive?

About a Custom Hat

Here's the green yarn I dyed along with my hands the other day:

It's Araucania Nature Cotton, which started out in Natural. It turned out really well, don't you think? It was my first time dyeing cotton with Procion dyes. I followed these instructions. The color is Moss Green.

Another notch on my belt.

I'm working on a custom cloche for Kristin Ellis. (I'm bartering for a sophisticated, moss agate ring.) The button in the photo is her family heirloom, from her grandmother. Isn't it amazing? The style has a name, but I forgot what it was.

This is the brim pattern I'm going to use:

It's called "River Run."

So I've got to squeeze this in between art knitting. Got a lot of knitting to do. I'm not complaining.

Thoughts of More than 140 Characters

Last night I was working on this piece, and I reached a point where I didn't know what to do. I was stymied. That happens sometimes. Usually I put it down for a day or two, but I'm on such a tight schedule with this show, I didn't have the luxury.

So I had a staring contest with it, and the knitting itself showed me the next step. I picked it up and started knitting again, and decided to not think too much about it. Just kind of went with it. It turned out really well, better than I thought it would.

I don't have a formula for what I do. I see the shape I want in my head, and then turn it into stitches and rows, like you might do with graph paper. And then I have to stretch it around in 3D, and think about how to do that in knitting. I don't make flat pieces and sew them together. They are knit into the shapes they become. I do sometimes manipulate them afterwards, like sculpting in clay, but the shaping has to be inherent for the molding to work.

I love this Habu stainless silk. The stainless gives structure to the shaping, while the silk keeps it feeling organic, like skin.

I like generating material from a thread. It's like creating out of thin air -- something from nothing, cellular mitosis -- but the cells are stitches. Magic and mathematics. A "subtle science and exact art."

I hope this list doesn't sound flippant or anything, but I do have a serious case of the F its. Not with the art. I'm totally in love with the art and super psyched about my two-person show coming up. And I don't have to get a job until I get the art done for the show, so I have a couple of months. But still, the thought of having been home for 12 years with kids and being completely unhire-able keeps me up at night.

Note to self: I have volunteered. A lot. I can organize. I'm friendly. I have a college degree. I'm not nothing.

And... I can sing. So, I've decided instead of getting a job, I'm going to sing in Sharon's band, get famous, and sell a million mp3 downloads. That's "Plan B" to being a successful, career artist. And, really, that's not an either/or scenario. Plus, Plan B makes Plan A seem possible -- likely, even.

I'll probably still have to get a job.

I had my last class of Young Designers today. I felt a little sad. But I will be glad to get the big table out of my studio, and move the pondering chair back in. Plus, I still get to help one student finish her pretty, purple, sparkly Christmas dress! (twinkle) I don't make such things for myself, but maybe I should?

I also dropped off my piece for Thumb Box Exhibition at the Ohio Art League gallery today. The reception is this Thursday from 6-9. I'll be hangin' with ma peeps and diggin' on some small, yet awesome, art.

And finally, this weekend is the North Market Holiday Open House and Craft Extravaganza! I'll be there both days. This is my final craft show. Ever! I know, I always say that.

Knittin' with the Lay-deez

I've taught beginning knitting -- many, many times. I have never before had students with such an intuitive grasp of the process, nor such even tension!

Michelle got all the way through knit and purl, cast on and bind off, and then wanted me to show her how to finish it! I taught her the mattress seam and weaving in ends! She made a cuff. COOL!

Laura got a late start, because she brought some slick yarn and metal needles. Once we got her some wool on some wood, she was a natural. Look at those stitches! Beautiful!

Judy is a crocheter, so I taught her Continental style. It took us both a while to get in the groove, but she still managed to make a skirt for Barbie. And then she... ate it with her needles like chopsticks? It made sense at the time. We'd had a couple of glasses of wine by then.

I guess that's what happens when you teach artists something arty. It's like BLAMMO! You give them the basics, and they run with it. I could barely keep up!

See, here's the thing. It's two days. I would say you should go on Sunday, because that's when I'm going to be there (and I want to see you!) But if I were you, I would go BOTH days. That's right. I plan to be there on Saturday (to shop) AND Sunday (to vend.) Also, if you go only on Saturday (which you won't, because you want to see me, right?) you'll also miss Sweet Stella Designs. And if you go only on Sunday, you'll miss Revelry Press! So you really have to go BOTH days to get the full experience.

Or maybe that's just me.

Por Vida on Saturday was magnificent, and it absolutely got me back into honoring the season. On Sunday, I pulled out an old family album and created an altar for my dearly departed.

I found a photo of my Great Aunt Mary. This was a woman who, after her brother's wife died of Tuberculosis, refused to marry and instead helped raise her brother's children -- and the next generation of children.

My family was poor, and in addition to ranching and farming, my Grandparents worked as itinerant cotton pickers during the season. Someone had to stay home with my own mother and her siblings during the hard times.

Aunt Mary was a steadfast feature of my childhood. I spent weeks of summer in the country at my Grandparents', and her house was just over the hills, a few miles away. She let wild kittens live under her porch, kept chickens, a large garden, smoked her own hams, and always laid out the best dinners. Her kitchen floor sloped.

She died when I was in my 20s, and living far away in California. That distance kept me from really feeling the loss of her. When I looked at the photo in my album, I caressed it, and tears I didn't know I had for Aunt Mary came tumbling out -- washing away unknown grief and opening my heart a little more.

These old rituals, regardless of their origin, serve a purpose -- a basic, human need -- to remember the dead, and release them, so we may make more room in our hearts for others.

I always felt Aunt Mary's sacrifice more deeply than her love. I could never understand how she gave up her suitor in favor of her brother's family. Yesterday, I thought perhaps she loved her family more than the man who offered her his hand. That wouldn't be so surprising, would it?

Word Body Love

Last weekend, some friends and I got together for a "beauty party," but with a twist. Instead of painting our fingernails and doing our hair, we wrote positive, affirming, loving words on our bodies. We used everything from eyeliner to washable markers, painted symbols with artists' colors, and also applied temporary tattoos. What a beautiful, tender, relaxing and uplifting experience this was for us. Some of us wrote our words down on paper before we washed them off, so we wouldn't forget.

The party was planned as part of a birthday month for my friend Amy. She wrote a wonderful article on her blog all about it, and linked to other relevant sites. Go check it out!

We didn't know that November 13th is To Write Love on Her Arms Day. A day sounds fun, but why not do it every day? Maybe just a little. One word. In the crook of your elbow.

Saturday is Por Vida, and I am fretting over my costume. Originally I thought of doing something like this (only with skull face paint):

because I am descended from these dead English dudes, and Lord Byron is all romantic and gothic and whatnot. I even bought some embellished silk to make an extravagant waistcoat, and a skull locket ring!

But now, I'm not so excited about that. I do have a great dress Eric brought back for me from Puerto Vallarta a few years ago. It is covered with embroidered cactus flowers, so I did a little research on an Aztec goddess associated with cactus, Chantico.

And I would totally dress up like that, and get up on stage and do a traditional Aztec dance, if I only had time to prepare!

Would, too.

Yuh huh.

But, I don't have that kind of time, so I think I've decided to wear my dress with a red wool shawl and some turquoise jewelry I have, tuck some roses behind my ears, and call me done. With some awesome face paint, maybe like these in this set on flickr which I cannot post without permission.

I especially love the halfsies ones.

I will have some new tombstone rubbing scarves at Por Vida, made especially for Por Vida II, with the logo! I saved some of my favorites, including this one:

I am working on the earflaps now. This is in Lanas Puras Melosa worsted "Midnight," although Kate and I like to call it "navy." Cuz we're bringing back navy.

But for me, I thought a button up cloche in this green wool might be fetching:

I love the button, and I love the green wool, but I'm not sure about them together.

Yeah, a lot of work that came to nothing. Knitting it will be a lot of work, too. I'm thinking about changing the color scheme and choosing a softer yarn for it -- then knitting it up for someone special. I need that, you know. Motivation.

Poor old Pit. He's not feelin' the love. He didn't sell. He doesn't get into shows. Boo hoo.

I decided to take him off the branches and let him sit on his own, which was how I originally wanted to display him. I wasn't sure the material could hold up to this, though. I was afraid he would collapse.

I'll let him sit like this for a week or so and see what happens. Of course he has the tendency to want to do this:

At the OAL Fall Juried Exhibition

I was excited to get in, but I underestimated how it would feel. When we arrived and began looking at the work, I realized I was part of a select group. It was a well-curated show. Only 27 out of 275 works were accepted, and mine was one of them. I felt honored, and a little humbled. I was proud to be represented with this group of artists.

My husband and I walked around and talked about the work. We discussed my own and what might be possible for presentation solutions. Basically, I need to be pursuing installation with some of this work. It's food for thought, and inspiration for sketching while I ponder the possibilities.

And, look! I made the cover!

This piece is going on to Metaphoric Fibers in the spring of 2010 at the Textile Center. I'm considering altering the presentation -- but if it becomes an installation, will I need to be there to install it? Probably. How to get to Minneapolis and back, twice, next spring?

Adam did a good job hanging this for me -- better, in fact, than I have done at home. He turned the t-pins vertically, and tilted them so the line was extended, which gave an illusion of continuation. What I really want is literal continuation in the space, and the illusion of interconnectedness with something greater.

Another thing: To me, because I am so familiar with it, and because it comes from inside of me, my work is lucid, and I sometimes fear it borders on the obvious. However, I was startled by how it looked in an outside environment like this, alongside other types of work. It was small and seemed obscure. The term my husband used was "unassuming." Another term I've heard used to describe my work is "sensitive." This isn't something I want to change, but it's something to consider.

If I had a solo show, people might take the time to slow down and really look at these small, sensitive, unassuming works. That's my hope, anyway.

1 skein Cestari Bulky Merino (shown in Thistle Pod brown and Moss green)
16-24" circular needles size US 11 / 8.0 mm
large cable needle or size US 11 double-pointed needle
1 size L / 8.0 mm crochet hook

gauge: 3 stitches per inch in K2 P2 rib

stitch instructions:
K2: knit 2 stitches
P2: purl 2 stitches
8LC: place 4 stitches on cable needle, hold in front of work, K2 P2 from left needle, K2 P2 from cable needle

Cabled Merino Tube Scarf

Pretty, huh? This is in Cestari Bulky Merino. The merino has next to the skin softness, is super warm, and snuggly. I'm going to make a few for Craftin' Outlaws: one each in Thistle Pod, Country Lavender, Moss, and Zinnia (shown above in Thistle Pod.) If you would like to place a special order now, you might want to go ahead and do that, as I don't see this yarn on Cestari's website anymore. Hopefully that's a snafu while they get their webstore ready.

I know. It looks like a Zen Jane Hoodie in purple Camo, right? Look again:

It has a lower, gathered neckline! So feminine! And unlike most shirts you see with a gathered cowl neckline, this one does not have puffy sleeves -- which are great, you know, if you're 12. But for the rest of us, I like the fitted sleeve with flared cuff.

I love this hoodie so much, I want to keep it for myself. But, no! I'm going to hang it on the rack. AND I'm going to make more of them in solids and prints. If this one doesn't sell by the last craft show of the season, I'm going to wrap it up and put it under the tree. To me, from Santa.

Aurora Borealis! Plus the button has little swirls and dots on it, so I mirrored that with cables and bobbles on the brim. Can you see them?

I've shaped these a little differently -- with a more modern fit like a beanie. I prefer the cloche fit, but I have a huge head. Others might find this slight adjustment easier to wear. I won't be doing this with all of them, though. And I still have yarn to make brown, red, orange, rose, and turquoise.

Finally, you can see I am wearing my favorite Halloween shirt in honor of it being the first day of October, my favorite month!

Fiber: Knitting - silk and stainless steel thread with found objects

I was looking at this piece, after I photographed it in the light box (naturally,) but before I dropped it off at the gallery last week. It was bothering me. It looked overworked or something. There was too much going on. It was... clunky.

Then I remembered a fashion rule I read somewhere:

"When you look at your reflection, the first thing that catches your eye, take that off." (It's always been an accessory. Don't worry. I don't leave the house topless.)

Can you see? The core of the piece -- the very thing I built it around -- had to go. Ixnay!

It's hard to tell in the photos, but seriously, the piece is way better without it. And it makes more sense, too. Not that it needs to make sense all the time, but you know what I mean. She's a vessel.

And, yep. That's a big ol' red sold dot. Yippee!

This Mortal Must Put On Immortality

Wow! It's been over a week since I've blogged last! That is unusual. It just seems, lately, there is nothing I feel like sharing here. I'm not sure what this means or why I feel this way. I think because it feels like the same-ol' same-ol'.

So here are some photos my friend Laura took of me while doing some tombstone rubbing scarves last weekend. (And here's a link to her Flickr.)

It looks surprisingly simple. But there is a lot more to it than meets the eye, and I have by no means perfected the process. Choosing the right stone is of utmost importance. Sometimes I get so excited by what is on the stone, I forget to check whether or not it is clear enough (not too eroded) to be transferable by rubbing. And then there is the medium itself -- the silk fabric is unwieldy, and the fabric crayons can be fussy. And, finally, you need an eye, and hand, for subtlety.

I keep thinking I will offer a tutorial on this, but I'm not sure I can tell anyone how to do it. The important stuff is in the impalpable details.

CAW (Creative Arts of Women) is taking over Lindsay Gallery for the first half of September. The opening reception will be during Gallery Hop next Saturday, September 5th. Twenty-five (or maybe more) women will have works on display, including me! It's a new piece. Which I am working on right now.

Which is why every blog post seems to be about a show. This is exciting for me, but makes for dull reading. I promise next week I'll post something juicy: like process or a how-to, or maybe even a story. The kids will be back in school, and I'll have time to breathe and reflect, which always makes for better blogging.

Craft & Crash at the Ohio State Fair

Come on down to the Ohio State Fair on Saturday for the first Handmade Expo featuring some of Ohio's finest artists and craftspeople! This takes place from 12-7 p.m. in the Family Fun Pavillion. I won't be vending, but I will be helping out with set up in the morning.

I won a Juror's Choice award and a Greater Columbus Arts Council award, the latter for Hungry. My friend Melissa Ayotte also won a GCAC award, and we definitely had the best cheering section at the ceremony, which included hollers and whistles!

1. Sometimes I think I hear my Dad's guitar playing in the middle of the night, or when nobody is in the house but me.
2. When I was little, I watched while a couple of my boy cousins tied a grasshopper to a bottle rocket and set it off. When we found it all blown up, I cried, and never did that again.
3. I have ADHD for real, and am off my meds right now. This is good, but my main problem seems to be forcing myself to engage in activities which require intense concentration. Once I get into it, though, I'm fine. So just do it, Alissa.
4. I noticed my youngest son, when confronted with unpleasantness, retreats into fantasy -- and realized that's what I do, too.
5. I don't like the pool; I like the creek, the river, the lake, and the ocean.
6. Art making is a spiritual activity for me.
7. After seeing all those photos Mollie took, I think I'm done with photos of me for a while. Maybe forever.
8. I'm hyper-sensitive, but I try to balance it with reason.
9. Despite all my issues and foibles, I have managed to be a pretty good mother. I truly amaze myself sometimes.

Summer Shift Tops

If you follow the Creatrix Jane shop, you'll know I've been making these summer shift tops. The great thing about them is they are simple, so I can make them at a good price point -- but they are made with high quality fabrics like 100% linen and swiss dot cottons, with detailing like french seams.

Blousey is in, and these are a little blousey -- but fitted at the hip and bust, so still form flattering. I love to wear them over shelf-bra camisoles!

It can be dressy or casual, depending how you wear it.

I typically make my prototypes in a medium because it is my most popular size. I'd also rather not make up too many in standard sizes, because this top will look best sized to fit your measurements. I'd rather sew it to fit, and it doesn't take more than a day or two if I have the fabric. (I can't get more of the yellow, I'm afraid, but I can get the red roses print in yellow, which is very similar!)

Desperate for something to blog about, I took my camera to my CCAD Pattern Drafting and Sewing class.

This is our teacher, Esther Chung. Isn't she adorable? I wish I could get away with blue hair. (I mean, cerrrruuuuulllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaannnn hair, and not old lady blue hair.) Anyway, she's showing us some stuff. Because it is an advanced class, she wasn't sure I'd be able to keep up. (She didn't know my level of experience.) I don't think she worries about that anymore. I've done a lot of it before, but it's great to be shown the tips and tricks, and be reassured that I've been doing it right -- filling in the gaps in my skill set.

I'm working on getting a solo show. This means I need to make some more work to represent what might be in the show, and then apply and be juried. Well, actually, I'm being "curated." Not a done deal, but I'm working towards that goal.

So, hey, just so you know: I have no plans to try to get on Project Runway, much to the chagrin of my friends. First off, I'd cry. Secondly, I have no desire for the grand prize: my own line of clothing (all official-like, I mean.) Nope, no desire. It's nice to know that. Art is my #1. The other stuff is fun, and I'm good at it, and if I can earn an income doing it, I will. But art is my priority.

And teaching. I luuurrrrvvvee teaching the kids! And the moms! Adult sewing and wet felting classes coming up in the fall! Stay tuned!

I should be sewing, but I'm cleaning out my studio, instead (because I'm contrary.) I'm taking some super nice felting and spinning fiber down to the North Market tomorrow to sell, so if you want to get your poke on (you needle-felters) or your spin on for cheap, come on down and check out the goods. You know I would love to give it away, but I'm too po.

I received an order yesterday for a custom white linen shift blouse. It is to be worn as part of a going-away outfit by a bride. I was touched to have something I created be part of someone's wedding trousseau. So what did I do?

I made her a blue linen hanky, that's what I did. And I embroidered it with her initial. Congratulations, A!

New Tombstone Rubbing Scarf Display

I purchased the statue, which is a reproduction of a French "Weeper," a grieving figure found in cemeteries. I also purchased the pillar, and stained it to match the statue. Then I added aged bronze handles around the top for hanging the scarves.

I plan to sit it on a table, but seeing it here -- on a stool -- gives me ideas. I would do it this way if I thought no one would bump it and knock it over. A nice, sturdy table is probably best.

I'm an award winner! I won't know which award until the reception.

My First 5K

I ran my first 5K on Saturday. If you check the results, where I am charmingly referred to as "Participant 1348," you'll see I ran it in 33.34 minutes, which is a 10.5 minute mile!

I'm ranked 154th overall, and 19th in the FEMALE AGE GROUP: 36 - 49. (Or, I will be when they update the results with my information, of which I have been assured, they will. Oh, they willlll. Yesssss, they WILL.)

I know this is nothing to brag about. Serious runners would laugh and point (and probably are right now!) However, I am dorkily thrilled. 10.5 minute mile! That's the best I've ever run.

What was it like? Well, it was fun. And it was a little frightening at first when everyone passed me. Okay, maybe not EVERYONE. But it felt like everyone. I kept my pace, though, and ran my tempo -- up and down to the music. I started passing a few people.

Some younger women, and even little girls, who had started walking would see me pass and then sprint past me again. Then I would pass them again later when they had to slow down and walk. After a while, they didn't bother to pass me anymore. I ran the entire race. I never had to stop and walk.

I did have to remind myself constantly that it was okay for people to pass me, and it was nothing to get upset about. I knew I was doing well. I just kept running.

I might do it again. No immediate plans, though. I doubt I'll shoot for a half-marathon anytime soon. Someone said I could do it in three hours. The thought of running three hours makes ME laugh!

Besides, I don't have the attention span to do ANYTHING for three hours... except sleep.

Consort

Mary L. is buried at the Africa Cemetery in Lewis Center, Ohio. Her tombstone designates her as the "Consort of Reverend McBride." It also says "She died as she lived..." Unfortunately, the rest of the words are illegible.

This scarf is the only one I've ever made with the markings from just one headstone. If Mary L. can be buried with the title of Consort carved upon her grave marker, I can honor her completely as she was remembered.

Sweetheart Wrap Dress

In the summer, I am always looking for that cool, comfy, cotton dress I can wear anywhere. I finally made one!

I'm calling it the Sweetheart Wrap Dress.

You may remember the horribly fitted wrap dress I made from a pattern. I'm beginning to find commercial patterns just as disappointing as ready-to-wear clothing. Oh, sure, I could make it to fit. But if the problem is in the design, then I've wasted my time and materials making something I can't, or won't, wear.

I draped this design on my dress form specifically to fit my body. In other words, I designed this completely, start to finish!

In the past, I've based most of my designs off basic shapes that any good designer has in her repertoire, and worked from there. But this was the first time I completely draped a design, and I'm so happy with it -- and very proud! See?

The bodice is pleated, and gives extra coverage up top. I can bend over in this wrap and not be showing off my bizness! To keep the silhouette from being too full, I added darts, and the back is fitted with darts, as well. The ties are long enough be wrapped all the way around like a belt, if desired. The design is adjustable, so it can fit a range of sizes (or just one person who tends to go up and down a bit, not like I know anyone who does that.)

It's made from 1930's reproduction fabric -- red cherry tomatoes on a navy background! My favorite summer colors! (And, it matches my Bomb Pop bobbie pin from Sweet Stella!)

(These are earrings, yes, but I ordered a custom bobbie pin barrette.)

I drafted a pattern from the muslin so I can make more. I don't have enough of the cherry tomato fabric left, although I could order it if anyone wants to place a special order. But I do have cherries, daisies, and wildflowers fabric. Super cute!

I'll be working on these the next few weeks, along with other new items for the shop. And don't forget to come see me at North Market this summer! Then you can try it on!

My Studio Buddy

Sometimes I get lonely working in my studio all by myself all day. That's why I'm glad my friend Sharon crocheted a companion for me:

His name is Fangster. Isn't he cuuuuuuute? He keeps my tea warm, and doesn't press me for conversation. He sits there and watches, and lets me work. Sometimes I whine and complain, but he doesn't mind -- or give me some head trip. He just listens. I think secretly he might want to suck my blood, but since I'm his only friend, he doesn't.
